It was created in 1996 through the merging of the French company Cacao Barry and the Belgian chocolate producer Callebaut, and it is based in Zürich, Switzerland. The company was created in its present form by Klaus Johann Jacobs. In 2019, it had 61 production sites, located in Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
