Albemarle Corporation is an American specialty chemicals and mining company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its principal businesses produce lithium compounds used in electric-vehicle batteries and energy-storage systems, and bromine-based specialty chemicals, including flame retardants. The company traces its origins to the Albemarle Paper Manufacturing Company, founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1887. The present company became an independent publicly traded corporation in 1994, when Ethyl Corporation spun off its specialty-chemicals business. In 2025, Albemarle reported net sales of approximately US$5.1 billion and approximately 7,800 employees, including employees of its consolidated joint ventures. Albemarle is one of the world's largest lithium producers. It extracts lithium from brine at the Salar de Atacama in Chile and at Silver Peak, Nevada. In 2025, commercial-scale lithium production in the United States came from a single continental-brine operation in Nevada. The company also holds interests in the Greenbushes and Wodgina hard-rock spodumene mines in Western Australia and operates lithium-conversion facilities in several countries. Wikipedia
